Cardinal shifter Red works his tailfeathers off as a waiter at The Woods. He doesn’t mind working hard at the diner, but some of the customers have mean streaks and he’s an easy target. When wolf shifter Growler comes in one day for his lunch, he’s immediately taken by Red and even defends him from the porcine bullies giving Red a hard time.
Red’s boss Reisha warns him about getting together with Growler. The guy is a wolf and Red’s kind are nothing but a light snack to wolves. Still, Red likes to make up his own mind, and sometimes a little danger is fun to flirt with, especially if it gets him what he needs, so when Growler offers to give him a ride on his motorcycle, Red is quick to accept.
Predator and prey usually make uneasy bedfellows, but that doesn’t seem to be the case for Red and Growler. Will they be able to fly in the face of convention and find the perfect nest together?
“Red, seriously, get out there and get those tables served!”
“Yes, ma’am.” Cappy ‘Red’ Osage wasn’t sure what had possessed him to take this job waiting tables at The Woods. He wasn’t very tall and, although he was quick as a bird (pun intended), he wasn’t the strongest bird on the block. Still, it was rent money and he could use it, so he hoisted the tray on his arm and went to work.
Solange seated a new guest at one of his tables, someone tall and fit with lots of hair, from what he could take in with a quick glance. A proper look at anywhere but where he was going was not a good idea when he had a full tray in hand and the three brothers whose food he was serving were not the most patient of customers, to put it nicely, but they were regulars.
No spilling, no dropping, no fucking up. His section was just off the bar, nearly a dozen tables out of the three dozen The Woods boasted.
“It’s about time you brought our food out, kid.”
The other two at the table cat-called, one of them swatting his butt.
He winced, shook his head. “Three burgers with onion rings?”
“Mine was fries,” the big one told him.
“So was mine.”
They had totally told him onion rings instead of fries. He remembered because he’d told them there was an extra charge for the substitution and they’d agreed to it. He managed to hold onto his temper, keeping as much of a smile on his face as he could.
“I’ll get my manager.” Fuckers. Assholes. Pig bungs.
They chortled, the sounds like squeals. They all dug into the food, too, including the onion rings, obviously happy to eat them. So help him, if he got dinged for their meals…
He felt the eyes of his manager on him, just waiting for him. Reisha was fair, but the big tiger was always looking for a reason to bite. Cats and birds didn’t exactly play well together, though he had to admit that he’d never felt physically threatened by Reisha; she only cared about the diner running smoothly.
“They want to speak to you. They said that I fucked up the order. I didn’t, though. They asked for onion rings instead of fries. Every one of them.” He’d stake his job on it. He didn’t say that out loud, though, because what if Reisha decided he was lying? He needed the work.
Reisha crossed her arms, looking into his eyes. They said she could ferret the truth out of anyone. He looked back. He wasn’t lying, so he had no reason to be scared. Didn’t mean he wasn’t just a little nervous – there was a lot of tiger in her regard.
Finally, Reisha nodded. “Get them fries and take the charge for the onion rings off their bill, and go serve your other tables.”
“I’m on it.” He scrambled back and forth, delivering waters and Cokes, pouring wine and beer.
A throat cleared, loudly, as he flew past the booth with the single, good looking man. Oh damn. He’d forgotten about the new table.
“Be right with you, sir. Let me drop this drink off.” Fuck. Fuck fuckity fuck fuck.
When he got back to the table, grey eyes met his gaze, piercing and clear. God, the guy was gorgeous, all Alpha Male, too.
